Illegal Working Conditions in Holcim’s Indian Subsidiaries - The International Labour Conference in Geneva condemns Holcim
Yesterday, at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) and the Swiss Trade Union Unia condemned Holcim for anti-worker and anti-union practices in its Indian subsidiaries ACC and ACL. Holcim’s subsidiaries in India continue to employ about 1,200 temporary workers on less favourable conditions than those for their permanent employees, although an Indian court has found that to be illegal. Moreover, for past few weeks, the Holcim subsidiaries have attempted to muzzle the temporary workers’ union by accusing one of its top representatives of imaginary crimes such as theft. Ambet Yuson, BWI General Secretary, did not mince his words at the... Read More »

What did you do before coming to this school? Before coming to this school, I used to assist my parents at a brick kiln in the Kishanganj district (Bihar State, India). 12 June 2011 - World Day Against Child Labour: The BWI says develop unionism

Turkey: BWI protests against the rising violence against women and arrest of trade unionists
"The BWI cannot tolerate the rising violence against women in Turkey and the arrest of trade unionists who protested against this intolerable situation. Each year, hundreds of women are murdered, harassed, assaulted, sometimes even in their workplaces", says Ambet Yuson, general secretary of the BWI. Members of KESK’s executive committee were taken in for questioning and charged for violating the law governing public gatherings and... Read More »

Going Global – the Struggle for Workers’ Rights at IKEA goes to the ILC
“It appears that IKEA has a dual personality, where they have two sets of labour standards. One, that projects a good image in its home country and another that practices bad labour policies in other countries.” These were the words of BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson as he addressed the assembled governments, employers and trade unions from all over the world yesterday at the 100th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva. The annual conference of the UN body, brings together many thousands of delegates from all parts of the globe. Earlier in the day, Yuson had delivered a similar message to the around 500 delegates from trade unions at the plenary meeting of the Workers’ Group at the Conference, and asked for their support of the BWI-led campaign. He received loud vocal... Read More »
